History of Pyrmont
In 1815 Pyrmont was changed from a trashed and unused place which was named “Bad Pyrmont” by a group of women as it reminded them of a popular place in Germany to a wonderful Australian attraction with something for everyone like shops, ferries and free entertainment. Pyrmont in 1815 was a trashed and unused place that no one used to go to or even go near as it was just a dump and had nothing else for people to do there. Urban Renewal brought rapid change to the City West region. The 2001 census revealed a population of 11,915 and by the 2006 census this had ballooned to 17,375 – an increase of over 45% in the intervening five-year period! The highest rate of population growth occurred in Pyrmont where high-rise residential buildings replaced abandoned industrial sites. The 27 hectare former Colonial Sugar Refinery (CSR) complex became Lend Lease’s fashionable residential community of Jackson’s Landing while derelict warehouses on Pyrmont Point and Darling Island became signature Mir vac developments.
